A.J. Holmes has made a record that captures an echo of a vanishing utopia.

Holmes has recorded a specifically composed collection of songs at Robin Hood Gardens, a residential housing estate in Poplar, London designed in the1960s by architects Alison and Peter Smithson, completed in 1972 and at the time of this recording, scheduled for demolition. The songs were recorded in various spaces around the site and no post-production, processing or effects were used.

In this era of current housing crisis in London; the aim was to capture the sound of an environment that would soon no longer be there, capturing an echo - literally - of an era of post-war social democracy and public housing boom (seen then as a solution to the housing shortage).

This is Holmes’s homage to Robin Hood Gardens, the people that live / lived there and the architects Alison and Peter Smithson.

Track Name: Where Moving
This moment’s for real
I feel so connected, Asleep at the wheel
I guess I’ll take the long way

Cos we’re making real ground
We’re making the sound of laughter
Don’t mean to make a fuss, Don’t mean to draw attention
I know compliments, Can be so hard to handle
Smile and say I know, Sometimes I can be such an arsehole

This moment’s for us, For us all together
Frozen, pristine, Well at least as much as can be

Everyone understands, That something so broad, so bland
Can be so life affirming, So maybe at least I’m learning
To live with myself, And to know a purpose
A chance just to exist, Shouldn’t be missed
Track Name: Song for Utopia
This is our country, Everyone’s happy
Does what they want to, Wakes when they want to
Everyone’s equal, Robots do the work we don’t want to
Everyone is a hero, And every hero has a home

Today,Today resolve,Today resolve, Today x 2

Our cities are masterpieces, A delight to see
Countryside lush and abundant, Large predators roaming free

Today,Today resolve,Today resolve, Today x 2

The people are so beautiful, So intelligent and fun
The food is delicious, And we’ve cured every known disease
This is our entry, A song for utopia
A national statment, From our country, Isonomy

No one is enslaved, And no one is compressed
There is enough space for all, You most come and visit soon
See for yourself, Stay if you want to

Today,Today resolve,Today resolve, Today x 6
Track Name: BossanoVa an Over Again
One day we’re all gonna die
We’re all gonna die, We’re all gonna die

Or then again

We’ll all be born, We’ll all be born, Be born again

Or then

We’re all gonna fight, We’re all gonna fight, That terrible fight

Or then again

On the way we might make some friends, And make amend

Again

Once or twice in every life, In every life
We’ll all fall in love, We’ll all fall in love, We’ll all fall in love with ourselves

Again

Through little you, Through little me, We can dream eternally
Through little us, Through little them, We can dream

Again

Every life deserves a sound bite, ‘Whatever Gets You Through the Night’
‘Everything is Gonna be Alright’, ‘I am not Afraid’
When you’ve found yours
Repeat to fade….

Once or twice in every life, In every life, In every life
We’ll all fall in love, We’ll all fall in love, We’ll all fall in love with ourselves

Again
Track Name: Money i(S) for Poor People
Deception vs Willing suspension of disbelief
Declare yourself an entropist, let the universe sort it out
Dark matter, You matter, All lives matter
All will be honoured and remembered but some only in books

Money is for poor people, This is the price we pay
For peace harmony and shopping
Perfection’s over-rated
If you don’t throw the ball, you won’t hit the coconut

Men who would be Napoleon
I admire Karl Max but I prefer Groucho
Austerity is manufactured to stop the working class
from building their own spaceships
Age out into the system, The cradle of human kindness
Waste is not waste until it is wasted

Money is for poor people, This is the price we pay
For peace harmony and shopping
Perfection’s over-rated
If you don’t throw the ball, you won’t hit the coconut
If you don’t throw the ball, you won’t hit the coconut
If you don’t throw the ball, you won’t hit the coconut
Track Name: Dead Leaders on Permanent Display
We can not turn the clock backwards
But we can wind it forward

Dead leaders on permanent display
Dead leaders forever to remain
Dead leaders, Dead leaders, Dead leaders
They’re never far away

Well if history has taught us one thing, That is that we have all learnt nothing
We would learn well from our mistakes
Then I’m sure we could repeat them all perfectly

Dead leaders on permanent display
Dead leaders forever to remain
Dead leaders, Dead leaders, Dead leaders
They’re never far away

And we can not turn he clock backwards, But we can wind it forward
For we are all anatomically - most - modern humans
Connecting with the divine, Not sure that’s a good use of my time
But maybe I’d accept a request of some kind

Dead leaders on permanent display
Dead leaders forever to remain
Dead leaders, Dead leaders, Dead leaders
They’re never far…
Away
